Letter- Critique of Fiji Muslim League Decision on make submissions to Constitution Commission

FIJI TRADES UNION CONGRESS ON CONSTITUTION REVIEW
16 November 2000

The Fiji Trades Union Congress calls on the Constitution Review Commission to disband itself in light of the High Court ruling on the 1997 Constitution delivered in
Lautoka yesterday.

The Court has ruled that the Constitution Review Commission is illegal. Therefore the Constitution Review Commission engaged in the purported review of the highest law of the land must show respect to the decision of the Court and discontinue its work forthwith.

The Congress has all along maintained that the Review exercise was a waste of fund and would serve no useful purpose. Over the weeks the Commission has itself complained, at times bitterly, that people were not showing interest in the work of the Commission. The Commission would now know for itself as to why it has not received legitimacy for its work

The Fiji Trades Union Congress is aware that some of the members would find the decision of the Court giving a very major blow to their personal interest. But this is not the time for serving very narrow and personal interest. It is time to uphold the rule of the law; a fundamental principle which is recognized and cherished by all law biding citizens. The members of the Constitution Review Commission must uphold the rule of the law and not engage in an illegal activity any more.
