Feds cry foul on terrorist finance document

Issue No: 1027; 21 August 2001

The National Federation Party has been irked by documents which claim its supporters financed the terrorists last year who took the elected government hostage.

Today's Fiji Sun reports that the NFP has defended the individuals listed as financiers of the terrorists. The Deputy Leader of the NFP, Dorsami Naidu is reported as saying: "These are people who are committed to Fiji and are working in the interest of the nation in the face of great adversity. They do not deserve to have their names slandered".

While the elected government was held hostage a list of many individuals and business houses was circulated as those financing the terrorists. The list comprises many Federation party people who had lost the elections in 1999, and many financiers of the party.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Fiji Labour Party has stated that a full list of names of people who had financed the terrorists is available with the police. The police has stated that it is investigating these people.

Earlier, the military's commander of the Third Infantry regiment, Lt. Col. Viliame Seruvakula had stated that 7 prominent businessmen, mostly ethnic Indians, were behind the terrorists. Last week, a terrorist who had stormed the Parliament told the Fiji Sun that corrupt businessmen had financed them.
