FT says Labour win assured

Issue No: 1028; 21 August 2001

The Fiji Times has predicted a win for the Fiji Labour Party in the elections which begin in 4 days time.

The paper stated today that the Labour Party has run "an intelligent and skilful campaign" and is certain to win. The editorial stated:
"The shape and style of the next elected government is likely to depend on the decision of one man."

"That man is Mahendra Chaudhry."

"He will almost emerge in two weeks time as the leader of the largest party in the new Parliament."

"The Fiji Labour Party has been able to retain much of its support, particularly in its strongholds in the West and the North."

"And once again, Labour has run an intelligent and skilful campaign."

"While others have preached about ideals and aspirations, Labour has hammered away at the issues that most concern people - the price of food, employment, education, health and social welfare."

"It worked in 1999 and there is every reason to believe it will work again in 2001."

"The FLP will find it harder this time, however. Other party preferences are on the whole ranged against labour while the breakaway New Labour Unity Party will have some impact on the election result."

"Nevertheless, when the smoke clears, Mr Chaudhry is the man most likely to hold all the cards."

"Even with a reduced number of seats, his party is still likely to be in a position to dominate Parliament."

"That gives Mr Chaudhry a range of options."

"He can pick off the other parties with the lure of Cabinet portfolios in order to form a coalition government with himself at its head."

"He can lead from behind by supporting a puppet prime minister with himself pulling the strings."

"He can become Opposition leader and vote down vital government legislation such as eh Budget due in November."

"Another election would almost certainly follow-with the FLP firm favourites for another 1999-style landslide."

"These are perhaps the most obvious options available to one of the most experienced and skilful politicians in the country."

"Which he will choose will no doubt depend on the number of seats his party can control in the new Parliament."

"But whatever deals are done in the post-election horse trading, the Fiji Labour Party will be a major player."

"It is unlikely that a government comprised of unlikely coalition partners can survive with the support of Mr Chaudhry."

"Many might argue that this is too much power for one man to have but the fact remains that it is the most likely outcome of this year's general election."
