10 more on terrorism charges

Issue No: 1029; 22 August 2001

Ten more people may be charged with offences relating to the terrorism of May 2000.

Police yesterday confirmed that it had sent files of 10 more people to the Prosecution Office. The ten include businessmen who funded the terrorists, and politicians. It is believed that included in the businessmen are ethnic Indian businessmen who were involved in years of tax avoidance in the country.

Tax avoidance has been costing the nation over $120m per year in lost revenue. Fiji's annual tax revenue is about $950m.

The confidence in the police and the military to bring to justice those responsible for terrorism, has significantly waned in the country.

Meanwhile, the Conservative Alliance Vanua Matanitu has stated that if it won power, it would release the terrorists charged with treason and other offences.

The National Federation Party has given the Matanitu party a higher preference rating in the election race than what it has given the Fiji Labour Party.

It is well known that many NFP supporters and politicians had funded the terrorists.
