Elections about democracy and justice - Chaudhry

Issue No: 1030; 22 August 2001

The elections from 25 August to 1 September are about democracy and justice in the country, says the elected Prime Minister and leader of the Fiji Labour Party Mahendra Chaudhry.

Chaudhry made the comments while addressing over 1,000 Labour supporters who packed the Andhra Primary School compound in Lautoka on Monday evening. He said that this election is about the rights of ordinary workers and farmers of the nation. He stated that if Fiji was to prosper, then it had to have a government which was clean, transparent and determined to uplift the welfare of the people. The past governments, he said, were riddled with corruption scandals and abuse of public funds and public confidence.

Chaudhry condemned those leaders and parties which threatened voters to vote against the FLP. He said that the workers must not be intimidated by the threats and must exercise their choice freely and without fear. The people must give the verdict on last year's terrorism, he said. "It is not the police; it is not the military; it is not the courts which will give the final verdict on the events of last year. It is the people", Chaudhry stated.

Other speakers at the rally also called for the workers to assert their right to self-determination. Speaking in Fijian, former army officer Sunia Kunawave Kubulu stated that the FLP was the only party which was multiracial and which catered for the ordinary people of the country.
