Another armed robbery

Issue No: 631; 27 March 2001

Another armed robbery has taken place in Suva.

A gang of thugs armed with knives and crow bars, violently robbed a supermarket cashier of $75,000 yesterday morning as the cashier was making his way to the bank. The robbery, at Nakasi outside capital Suva, took place only metres from the Police Post. Four of the five robbers were caught later in the day after a taxi driver gave chase to the robbers, who used a tinted Pajero for the heist. The taxi driver informed the police of the whereabouts of the robbers.

Violent crime now is the norm in Fiji.

Terrorist George Speight had harboured dozens of hardened criminals in the Parliament Complex. He even supplied 5 automatic weapons to a group of ex-criminals who were on the path of reform. The group reported the matter to their supervisor who asked that the weapons be returned. The group claimed that those giving the weapons, which were military-issued, asked them to start shooting at the civilians and to go on a rampage on the evening of Sunday 28 May and on Monday 29 May last year.

Most violent crime in Fiji has the hand of either defeated politicians or people who have turned terrorists.
