160 Naitasiri families get state funded toilets

Issue No: 642; 30 March 2001

Naitasiri residents will get 160 toilets constructed by the government under the Laisenia Qarase's Blueprint for Fijian Development.

Today's Daily Post reports that the Naitasiri Provincial Council has received funds from the $1.4m allocated by the Qarase regime, and that $100,000 will be used to build 10 toilets each in the 16 tikinas.

The paper quoted a provincial official as saying: "It'll all come to about 160 sets of flush toilets and that will be 10 each for the 16 tikinas, but not all families will get it".

The official also stated that Naitasiri is one of the largest provinces and richest in natural resources.

The use of state resources to construct toilets for private families in a province which claims immense riches, shows the path which the Qarase regime is leading the nation on.

It is believed that the Blueprint and the associated disbursement of public funds to ethnic Fijian villages is intended to buy support for the general election.

Already Qarase has started using public funds to make donations to schools and provincial councils. One of the donations was made to a Suva school. Qarase had earlier stated that he intended to contest the election either in Suva, or in Lau.
