Bus Operater on Strike

Issue No: 660; 6 April 2001

A bus operator in Vanua Levu has gone on strike claiming that he can not service the routes allocate to him because of poor road conditions.

The company, Eastern Express Limited, stated in a paid advertisement that it was withdrawing all its buses from the public routes.

The Fiji Bus Operators Association, comprising largely rich ethnic Indian bus operators, has supported the operator. Taxi operators, however, have refused to join the strike.

Meanwhile the Qarase regime has responded by issuing licenses to minivans to service the routes.

The condition of Fiji's roads have been rapidly deteriorating since the attempted coup last year. Some prominent bus operators and people associated with the bus industry in Fiji allegedly financed the terrorists and the overthrow of the People's Coalition Government.
