Law Society wants CJ to resign

Issue No: 622; 7 April 2001

The Fiji Law Society has finally made up its mind and has called on the Chief Justice to resign.

Law Society's President, Chen Bunn Young says that the CJ should to the honorouble thing and step down. Failing this, he said, the Society will petition for the CJ's removal.

The CJ has come under massive condemnation for politicising the judiciary. (see http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no618.htm ; http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no634.htm )

The Law Society's call for resignation has been hailed by the people of Fiji.

Meanwhile, unnamed `government lawyers' have condemned the call by the Law Society, saying that the Society should have sought an unanimous endorsement from its members before making the resignation call. It is believed that the unnamed lawyers include the regime's Attorney General. The current regime has been clinging to power illegally.
