ACP-EU calls for lasting land solution

The ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly which met in Gabon last month, has called for a lasting solution to native land issues.

The Assembly stated that it acknowledged that "native land issues and economic inequality are at the heart of ethnic tension in Fiji".

It then called on the ACP-EU Commission "to support initiatives of the government and other development partners in Fiji that will bring about a fair and equitable resolution to these problems and thereby engender lasting political stability for the citizens".

The Assembly also expressed concern that the stirring up of ethnic tension in Fiji. It stated that continued uncertainty over the democratic future and social and political stability in Fiji "is leading to increased unemployment and poverty".

The Assembly also called for "those involved in hostage-taking and murders in the Pacific region to be brought to justice in accordance with the relevant laws".

The Assembly also stated that it wants "free and fair" election sin Fiji, and called on the President "to ensure that all ethnic communities and other sectors of Fiji society are guaranteed their right to participate in the elections".

The Assembly agreed that they delay the imposition of sanctions with the hope that democracy would be restored in Fiji.
