Qarase told to resign

Issue No: 676; 12 April 2001

Regime's Prime Minister, Laisenia Qarase has been told to resign if he wants to contest the next election.

The most recent call comes from Tomasi Vakatora. Vakatora was one of the three members of the Constitutional Review Commission chaired by Sir Paul Reeves. He is also a former Speaker of the House and a former Minister.

Speaking on last nights TV news, Vakatora stated that the distribution of public funds by Qarase is perceived as buying support. He said that if Qarase wanted to contest the election, he must resign.

Calls for Qarase's resignation have come from other political parties as well.

So far Qarase has refused to budge from his post.

Meanwhile, the SVT, the VLV and a faction of the Fijian Association have asked Qarase to join their respective parties. Qarase has announced that he will only join them if they unite and form an united ethnic Fijian political party. He stated that he may form his own political party with members of his cabinet.

In another interesting development, Qarase's cabinet member and terrorist supporter, Apisai Tora has announced that he will form a new political party.
