Another corruption case withdrawn

Issue No: 696; 24 April 2001

The state prosecution office has withdrawn another case involving corruption.

Yesterday it filed a nolle prosequi withdrawing all proceedings against Ratu Ovini Bokini. Bokini was charged with 32 counts of official corruption - involving the National Bank of Fiji. He was also a SVT member of Cabinet in the SVT regime.

The National Bank, which collapsed leaving the tax payers a bill of about $500m, was used by post-1987 coup politicians aligned with the military and SVT regimes, as a slush fund. So far none of those charged with the offences have been successfully prosecuted. The investigations into the Bank scandal were handled by Police Commissioner Isikia Savua.

The DPP is quoted by the media as saying: "Under the prosecution policy in Fiji, I have decided, in the interests of fairness and objectivity, not to pursue the matter against Ratu Ovini Bokini".
