Public pressure on police to investigate coup plotters

Issue No: 702; 26 April 2001

The Police Department has begun on respond to public pressure to bring to justice those persons behind the attempted coups of last year.

According to media reports, the police now say that they want to talk to Lt. Col Viliame Seruvakula for evidence on the coup plotters. Seruvakula had earlier stated that there were 7 main coup plotters; the 7 included ethnic Indian businessmen, military officers, and former military officers. (see: http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no697.htm http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no678.htm ) http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no673.htm http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no672.htm

The media reports that the police are now trying to get Seruvakula back from New Zealand for the investigation.

While still in Fiji, Seruvakula had told the media that the real coup plotters were still free. The police failed to respond to the claims then.

It is now believed that since Seruvakula is no longer in the Fiji army, there is a concerted effort on the part of some military officers and former military officers to tarnish the reputation of Seruvakula. This could not have been done while he was still the Commander of the Third Fiji Infantry Regiment as he was a very popular commander.

So far the police has not released any detail on the progress of the investigations on the businessmen who financed the terrorists.
