Issue No: 704; 26 April 2001The Great Council of Chiefs meets again today at the military barracks. The meeting, to be chaired by the new chairperson Ratu Epeli Ganilau, is expected to discuss matters concerning ethnic Fijian unity. A report has been complied by a GCC subcommittee on ethnic Fijian unity. It is also understood that the Qarase regime wants the GCC to
also discuss a report on the harvesting of mahogany. Qarase has been quoted by
the media as saying that mahogany is now the only salvation for the country's
battered economy. But sources close to the GCC say that the chiefs will not
discuss the mahogany issue. It is understood that mahogany discussions has the
potential of further dividing the ethnic Fijians now. |
