Public funds used for SVT - report confirms

Issue No: 706; 27 April 2001

A report has confirmed that over the past 9 years, pubic funds have been used to prop up the political party led by Sitiveni Rabuka.

The report, prepared by a subcommittee of the Great Council of Chiefs on ethnic Fijian Unity is to be tabled at the GCC meeting today.

The report states that from the submissions it received during the 80 public hearings, it found that the provincial council premises and secretariats have been used as SVT party officers.

The provincial councils and council secretariat is funded by the state through annual budgetary allocation. The councils are conduits for channelling peoples views about rural development to the government.

Most provincial councils have refused to provide audited reports to the government on the use of public funds which they receive. The hundreds of thousands of dollars which each of the 14 council receives each year adds to many millions of dollars. This issue was highlighted earlier by this website. See http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no689.htm ; http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no653.htm )

The abuse of public trust and public funds by the SVT is another glaring example of corruption and nepotism under the SVT regime.
