Police Commissioner leads attack on Seruvakula

Issue No: 709; 28 April 2001

The police commissioner Isikia Savua this week stated that he wants Lt. Col. Viliame Seruvakula to be extradited for investigations into the attempted coups of last year. Alternatively, Savua stated, it will seek the help of the Interpol to get Seruvakula.

The statements have drawn fire from the public.

This website had stated that coup plotters were going to tarnish Seruvakula's image. This charge is now led by Savua.

Savua's name heads the list of persons behind the terrorists.

Numerous lawyers have informed the media that the Police can not extradite Seruvakula, or involve the Interpol, because he has not committed any crime.

The fact that Savua mentioned extradition and Interpol is clear indication that these people want to portray Seruvakula as a criminal and disloyal citizen.

Seruvakula had stated that the coup plotters are still free and have not been investigated. He also stated that the attempted coups had nothing to do with indigenous rights.

Numerous key persons behind the terrorists are either holding important posts or are multi-millionaires. All of them have strong links with corruption and racketeering in the country. All of them flourished under the Rabuka regime. Rabuka's party lost the 1999 elections, together with its Coalition partner the National Federation Party. Many ethnic Indians who supported the terrorists belong to the NFP.
