Qarase operates slush fund

Issue No: 711; 29 April 2001

In what has become a trend, regime's Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has continued to dish out public funds at buy support.

During the week, he gave out over $40,000 to the Queen Victoria Secondary School. The funds were from the Prime Minister's office. The QVS is a government school catering exclusively for ethnic Fijian students. Its funding comes from the Ministry of Education.

Yesterday Qarase gave out $4,000 to another, unnamed, school in Savusavu. The school, Savusavu Secondary School, received this money also from the Prime Minister's office.

The fact that Qarase continues to dish out such funds at will, and without questions on its impropriety, emerges from the apparent support which Qarase claims to have from the Council of Chiefs and the President.

That institutions such as GCC and President lend support to a person who epitomises corruption, bad governance, and racism, sends clear signals to all the citizens that this mode of behaviour is acceptable in the land.

So far, other than the People's Coalition Government, no individual or repute, or institution, has questioned the entrenchment of corruption, nepotism and racism by the Qarase regime. The fact that Qarase operates this slush fund has not been questioned by the Auditor-General either.
