The regime's Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has continued to distribute cash in the lead up to the August elections. On Tuesday, Qarase gave out $10,000 ($US5,000) to the Methodist Church's Suva circuit. In return, Qarase was given a traditional presentation of a roasted pig and root crops. A TV news report showed the presentations being carted away in an official police vehicle. The TV report also stated that the transportation of the materials - on open tray - was contrary to the Land Transport Authority Act. Last night Qarase stated that the donation came from his personal funds. Qarase's distribution of cash has become the subject of joke
in Fiji. A cartoon in one of the dailies showed Qarase asking for votes while
people demanded cash. |
