Samanunu to be cleared

Issue No: 730; 3 May 2001

It is believed that Adi Samanunu Talakuli Cabokau will be cleared of all charges by the committee which is investigating her involvement with the terrorists.

The Committee, chaired by disgraced civil servant Sakiusa Rabuka, has reportedly claimed that there is no evidence against Samanunu.

Samanunu had left her post as Fiji's High Commissioner in Malaysia to visit the terrorists and address them at the Parliament Complex while the terrorists were holding the government hostage. She also reportedly used public funds for her travel, and piled a huge phone bill at the embassy.

The media reports that Talakuli had left her post with the expectation that she would be appointed the Prime Minister by the terrorists and the Great Council of Chiefs.

Another civil servant, who was the first secretary at Fiji's High Commission in Canberra, had also left his post and joined the terrorists. After the release of the hostages, he was arrested by the military from the hotel room where Samanunu was staying. The civil servant, Rusiate Korovusere, has been suspended without pay by the Public Service Commission.

So far no civil servant has been sacked or disciplined for supporting or working with the terrorists.
