Gun used in robbery

Issue No: 731; 7 May 2001

A gun was used to rob a taxi driver last week.

Media reports that some youth hired a taxi from Nabua outside Suva City and took him to a new residential subdivision just minutes away where they held the driver up with a pistol and demanded money from him. When residents closed in on the taxi, thugs fled dropping behind a loaded magazine.

It is understood that the weapon is military issued.

An unaccounted number of military weapons have been missing since the military released weapons to the terrorists holding the government hostage last May.

The regime has issued an amnesty for the past many months, but no weapon has been surrendered.

It is believed that the weapons are in the hands of supporters of terrorists. Analysts believe that the terrorists are planning another offensive against pro-democracy targets and state institutions.
