Soldiers shoot villager

Issue No: 734; 7 May 2001

Soldiers shot a villager outside Labasa town to disarm him late last week.

According to media reports, the villager was threatening fellow villagers and police officers with a loaded spear gun. The soldiers then shot the villager in the leg to disarm him.

This is one of the first incidents where the military has used guns to disarm ethnic Fijians.

The action has been reportedly condemned by some ethnic Fijians. The village chief stated that he should have been approached to talk to the villager and calm him down.
