Ah Koy company in more trouble

Issue No: 749; 11 May 2001

Rabuka's close political ally and one time financier, Jim Ah Koy is in further trouble with the law.

On Thursday the media reported that the Ah Koy companies have not been paying Fiji National Provident Fund for its employees at three of their businesses. The three are Naigani Island resort, Industrial Technology, and Falekau South Pacific. The FPNF has taken the companies to court to recover the money. FNPF contributions are superannuation contributions for workers to which the workers and the employers each contribute 8% of the wages.

Today the media reports that Ah Koy is under investigation for moving money out of Fiji illegally. State owned radio, Bula FM, had originally ran a story in its news program that a prominent businessman whose shop was burnt earlier this year, was under investigation for taking insurance money out of the country. Today, the Fiji Sun states that the businessman is Jim Ah Koy. Ah Koy threatened the paper: "You can go ahead and do the story, but I will sue the company and you. A writ against Bula FM has already been filed for running that story in their breakfast programme some weeks ago".

Ah Koy companies, and Ah Koy personally, have been involved in numerous shady deals. He is alleged to have made his millions through insider dealings, corruption, and nepotism. He has also been alleged to have financed and supported the terrorists who took over the government hostage last year.
