Terrorist - soldier rearrested

Issue No: 751; 12 May 2001

The head of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit Lt. Penaia Baleinamau, has been rearrested.

Baleinamau was freed after 277 days in custody this week after his wife sought his release through a habeas corpus application. The military stated after the judgment that it would respect the court decision and free Baleinamau.

But yesterday Baleinamau was rearrested by the military.

The military now says that he was involved in the May 19 attempted coup, and will be charged with either treason or offences related to it.

Baleinamau had authorised the release of military weapons to the terrorists in May.
