Military made deals with terrorist soldiers

Issue No: 752; 12 May 2001

The military made a deal with the soldiers involved with terrorism.

A media report today reveals the deal under which the soldiers had agreed to remain at the military barrack custody in return for them not being charged and continuing to be on the military payroll.

The revelations come after the re-arrest of the now disbanded CRW head Lt. Penaia Baleinamau.

The report states that Baleinamau was rearrested because he had breached the "gentleman's agreement" by taking the military to court. The military felt betrayed by this breach. The agreement was for the CRW soldiers to be detained at the [Queen Elizabeth Barrack] and they would not be charged while they continued to receive their pay.

The CRW soldiers had trained the terrorists and joined them to take the government hostage last May. In November the unit was involved in a failed bloody mutiny and an attempted coup. The Unit was created by former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka as the equivalent of his `palace guard'. Rabuka has been alleged to be behind the terrorists in their attempt to kill the military commander and to depose the elected government.

That the military had made a deal with the terrorists is a strong indicator that the military was consciously involved with the terrorists in deposing the elected government.
