Military weapons release on top orders

Issue No: 763; 15 May 2001

The release of arms from the army's armoury for the 19 May terrorist activities was authorised by very senior officers of the army.

Today's Fiji Times reports that CRW Unit's head, Lt. Penaia Baleinamau will be charged with offences relating to the release of weapons to the terrorists. But it states that Baleinamau signed the weapon release documents after "orders from the top".

It is known that some very senior army officers were involved with the terrorists. They got cold feet after the 3rd Fiji Infantry Regiment refused to join the terrorists.
