Samanunu cleared

Issue No: 772; 18 May 2001

Fiji's Ambassador to Malaysia, Adi Talakuli Samanunu Cakobau has been cleared of charges that she was involved with the terrorists.

The Pubic Service Commission yesterday stated that the Inquiry into her conduct found no evidence of her involvement with the terrorists.

Talakuli had travelled from Malaysia to Fiji and then went to the Parliament Complex where she hosted a meeting the supporters of the terrorists on July 11-13. She was also given a guided tour of the arms which the terrorists had amassed. These events were given extensive media publicity in the country. Later Talakuli had made a bid to become the Prime Minister. She was proposed by the Speight team and supported by the Police Commissioner Isikia Savua.

The Inquiry team, headed by disgraced diplomat Sakiusa Rabuka, who now is the Permanent Secretary for Justice, said no critic of Samanunu brought forward any evidence against her.

The People's Coalition Government had earlier stated that the Inquiry team was made up so as to clear Samanunu. See: http://www.pcgov.org.fj/hot_press/no641.htm .
