Qarase's party financed by Fijian Holdings Ltd

Issue No: 773; 18 May 2001

Evidence has come forth that the Political Party formed by Laisenia Qarase is being financed heavily by the Fijian Holdings Ltd.

Inside sources reveal that the launching of the Party had a massive contribution from the Fijian Holdings Ltd. It is also believed that the company has promised more financial support to get the party going, as well as to fund the party in the election.

The Fijian Holdings Ltd was established by the government to bring more ethnic Fijians into the mainstream of business. The state gave out many millions of dollars of taxpayer's money to fund the company. But most of the funds have been used for personal benefits. Qarase has also been a beneficiary of the Fijian Holdings Ltd. See: http://www.pcgov.org.fj/docs_c/fijian_holdings_fdb_details.htm .

It is also believed that a top-ranking executive of the Fijian Holdings Ltd was considered by the coup plotters to provide the public face to the coup. When he got cold-feet, George Speight was recruited. Many ethnic Fijians believe that the attempted coup was a Fijian Holdings-Native Lands Trust Board hatched coup.
