$10 fine for terrorists

Issue No: 778; 19 May 2001

Soldiers who rebelled in Labasa at the height of the hostage crisis have been fined $10 each and bound over, after they pleaded guilty to unlawful assembly.

The 54 soldiers appeared in the Labasa Magistrates Court on Thursday. They were charged with assembling at the Sukanaivalu Barracks between 4 July and 3 August 2000 in support of terrorist George Speight. They had taken over the command of the Barrack.

The Magistrate, Eparama Rokoika stated that the soldiers were part of the public service. He said that having this in mind he fined them $10 each. They were also bound over for 18 months.

Rokoika was appointed magistrate late last year.
