Military investigates its own lawyer

Issue No: 779; 19 May 2001

The Fiji Military Force is investigating its own Director of the Legal Department, Lt. Col. Etueni Caucau, for his involvement with the terrorists last year.

According to a media report, the investigation was prompted after revelations by the CRW Unit soldiers who are now charged with mutiny, and by revelations from Lt. Col. Viliame Seruvakula that some senior army officers involved with the terrorists are still free.

Caucau was part of the military team which began negotiations with the terrorists on 19 May last year. Others included Lt. Col. Filipo Tarakinikini, and the then Acting Commander Col. Alfred Tuatoko.

Caucau came to public attention last year after the investigations into the terrorists and mutineers had begun.

Before the 2 November failed mutiny and attempted coup, the People's Coalition Government had received information that Caucau was involved in the 19 May attempted coup. An article on this was written for this website, but was held back as the military had promised the nation that it was investigating its own officers involved with the terrorists. We today publish that article.
