Union under threat

Issue No: 794; 24 May 2001

Trade unions are now increasingly coming under threat from the Qarase regime.

This week, the Airports Fiji Ltd (AFL) has announced that if no longer recognises the Fiji Public Service Association (FPSA) as a legitimate representative of the workers at the airport, and that the collective agreement between them is no longer in force.

The AFL has also dismissed 6 employees who are also members of the FPSA.

The AFL is a corporatised enterprise owned by the government. Earlier this year, the Qarase regime's Tourism Minister Jone Koroitamana was appointed the CEO of the AFL.

Before the People's Coalition Government came to power, the SVT government had embarked on a mass lay-off of workers from the AFL. The People's Coalition Government had reabsorbed the laid off workers. Now the Qarase regime has again begun to lay-off workers
