More terrorists likely to be freed

Issue No: 796; 25 May 2001

More terrorists are likely to be free today by the Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo.

This follows the lack of appearance of two key witnesses, both from the military, at the court hearing the case of unlawful assembly against 10 terrorists. The terrorists had assembled at the Kalabu Fijian Primary School after leaving the Parliament Complex when the hostages were released. The witnesses, who were earlier informed about the case dates, are abroad. The Magistrate received written submissions from the lawyers on both sides. The terrorists' lawyer is submitting that there is no case to answer, while the prosecution is asking for an adjournment till September.

Meanwhile, giving evidence at the trial, Naitasiri high chief Ratu Inoke Takiveikata said that the terrorists were camped at the Kalabu School to "celebrate their victory at the Parliament Complex".
