Qarase under investigation for fraud

Issue No: 797; 25 May 2001

Regime's Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase is being investigated by the Auditor-General's Office for receiving allowances which are more than that permitted by regulations.

Today's Fiji Times reports that to date Qarase has been paid $15,000 more than his entitlement as housing allowance. Qarase is staying in rented accommodation costing the state $3,000 per month. Until December this year, the rent for the same property was $2,500 per month. The building belongs to the Merchant Bank of Fiji which is a subsidiary of the Fijian Holdings Ltd. It was earlier reported that the Fijian Holdings Ltd has been funding Qarase's new political party.

Knowingly accepting funds which are more than ones entitlement is fraudulent. It remains to be seen whether Qarase will be charged for fraud.
