Another uprising likely

Issue No: 801; 28 May 2001

The ingredients for another violent uprising are all present in Fiji.

So states a letter printed in today's Fiji Times. The letter, written by one S. Fuli, states:
"Do opponents [of Qarase] have the mindset and means to ensure there is no return o May 19 2000? I ask because all the necessary ingredients are there. Many guns are still missing from the army camp. George Speight's supporters are still out there in Korovou, Labasa, Savusavu and Suva. There are a lot of disgruntled people not happy with the actions of the CCF and the Fiji Law Society. All they need is a little agitation and they will march again. They say when the going gets tough, the tough get going".

The letter raises significant questions on the military's inability to locate all the weapons which it had released to the terrorists, and the military's ability to track down the terrorists still out free. To compound the problem the Chief Magistrate Salesi Temo, and other fellow magistrates have been releasing terrorists into the society at will - as if he is preparing the terrorists for another round of uprising.

The failure of the military to quell the terrorists early enough, and its deposition of their Commander in Chief and the President, together with the revelations of the involvement of numerous senior military officers with the terrorists, and the military's inability and unwillingness to uphold the Fiji Court of Appeal decision, has taken the public's confidence to an all time low.
