Speight's legacy - jobless Fijians, crime prostitution

Issue No: 809; 30 May 2001

As the terrorist George Speight's case goes to a preliminary inquiry, a journalist has described Speight's legacy as ethnic Fijians without jobs, without money to pay
school fees, and forced into crime and prostitution.

In an article originally published in last week's Fiji Times, Graham Davis argues that having ruined Fiji, Speight must not be allowed to stand for the next election. Davis writes: "For Fiji citizens of all races, the notion of this gun-toting goon donning the mantle of a democrat is simply too perverse to contemplate".

Davis describes Speight as a viavialevu (show-off) always scheming ways to make a lot of money.

Davis also argues that Speight "is no longer safe anywhere in Fiji as the [Lauan] bati [warriors] wait patiently to bite back. One military officer told me that if he does go to jail, he'll be killed inside. And if he's freed, he'll be killed on the
streets. Either way, said this officer, Speight is a dead man walking. So
right now, he'd better be praying hard and fast."
