Regime, Sami want NLTA

Issue No: 820; 4 June 2001

The Qarase regime wants the Agricultural Landlords and Tenants Act (ALTA) to be repealed and all native land to be administered by the Native Lands Trust Act (NLTA).

The Chief Executive of the Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Council, Jagarnanth Sami has also stated that he see nothing wrong with the NLTA. A newspaper today reported Sami as saying that the change from ALTA to NLTA would make no difference provided that the rights of the farmers were protected. The NLTA, however, has no provision to protect the interests of the tenants.

Sami was the secretary of the NFP's Fiji Cane Growers Association and has been an activist of the NFP. Many believe that Sami's statement reveals the stand which the NFP is taking on land matters.

Earlier the NFP had endorsed the NLTB's plans. These plans have been widely condemned by local and international bodies as creating virtual slavery in the country.
