UN team in Fiji to report on election

Issue No: 843; 12 June 2001

A team from the UN is in Fiji to assess the preparations going on for elections scheduled for August this year.

The team is expected to report on the preparations to the UN and assess the type of international observers which would be needed in Fiji to observe the elections.

Numerous organizations and politicians have expressed doubts at the regime's intentions for the coming elections. One prominent politician from the SVT has stated that he suspected that the Qarase group would rig the elections.

The Elections Office is an independent office headed by Walter Rigamoto. Rigamoto has defended the independence of the Office and has rejected claims of possible election rigging. But the elections are actually conducted by civil servants over who Rigamoto has no control. The Qarase regime has strategically placed throughout the nation civil servants with apparent bias towards the regime.

The regime had earlier stated that it would allow observers from the UN, EC and the Commonwealth to observe the election.
