30% of medics have left Fiji

Issue No: 864; 19 June 2001

A third of the medical professionals have left the country since the terrorist actions of last year.

This was revealed by the Fiji College of General Practitioners over the weekend.

The College stated that the departure was from all fields, ranging from nurses, doctors, para-medical staff, and Medical school staff.

The country is facing a severe problem of shortage of doctors, nurses and other medical staff. Numerous cases of negligence have been reported through the media. Reports - including non-treatment of serious cases, wrong diagnosis, and deaths attributed to negligence - are almost a daily affair.

The Qarase regime has been unable to handle this problem.
