Regime hires terrorist

Issue No: 872; 21 June 2001

The Qarase regime has hired the terrorist Peceli Rinakama as a consultant in the Ministry of Education.

Rinakama was hired last year to advice the regime on ethnic Fijian education.

Rinakama was a key member of the Speight terrorist support group at the Parliament Complex when the terrorists held the elected government hostage. He was vying for the Education Minister's post in the Speight Cabinet. Rinakama was a member of the Fijian Association and was elected to the Parliament, but later broke away and joined the group which backed the terrorists. Rinakama's leader in the Fijian Association dissident faction, Tuakitau Cakanauto is a Qarase regime minister. Cakanauto had close business ties with ethnic Indian businessmen Hari Punja. Punja has been reported to be one of the key financiers of the terrorists.

The Citizens Constitution Forum (CCF) has demanded an explanation from the regime on Rinakama's hiring. The regime has not responded to the demand.
