Issue No: 874; 22 June 2001The conman Navin Naidu was released on bail yesterday by the Suva Magistrates Court. Naidu was engaged by the conman-cum-terrorist George Speight to represent him in the treason trial. He was later found not to be having the legal qualifications he claimed he had, was arrested and charged for making false statements on oath, uttering forged documents and attempting to pervert the course of justice. Naidu later engaged lawyer Haroon Ali Shah to defend him, and claimed that mosquitoes and the detention curry diet troubled him. Shah argued that the charges against Naidu were misdemeanours only and a bail should be given. The court gave the bail and required Naidu to surrender his passport, not change his address from Vomo Street, Lautoka, report to the police station 3 times a week, not to interfere with witnesses, and stay away from political meetings. The Fiji Labour Party has condemned the move by Shah and the
Magistrate's Court. Mrs Koroi stated: "This man, completely unknown to
anyone, flew into the country, attempted to fool our judicial system by
presenting false papers and credentials in She further stated that Shah's decision to represent Speight's
co-called lawyer was even more reprehensible considering that the coup-leader
had attempted to overthrow "Speight kept his former colleagues in the People's
Coalition Government as She expressed surprise at the court decision to grant bail to
Navin Naidu saying the man who had tried to hoodwink the court system once was
capable of doing anything to evade justice. |
