Labour hits at Commerce Chamber

Issue No: 875; 22 June 2001

The Fiji Labour Party has hit out at the Fiji Chamber of Commerce for its stand on the investigation of businessmen behind the terrorists.

Labour President Mrs Jokapeci Koroi expressed strong objections to claims by the President of the Fiji Chamber of Commerce, Taito Waradi, that allegations that certain businessmen were involved in the coup plot was mere electioneering.

Mrs Koroi said: "The Fiji Labour Party has been saying repeatedly since last year that a number of prominent local businessmen were involved in the coup plot. Some had financed the coup, others provided supplies to rebels in Parliament during the hostage crisis."

"We have been urging since last year that these people be investigated and brought to justice for the crime they perpetrated on the nation. The names are with the Police and I call on the investigators to move with greater speed in completing their case against these enemies of the nation."

Mrs Koroi reiterated her earlier call for the removal of the Commissioner of Police Isikia Savua. "As long as Savua remains at the head of the Police force we will see no real progress in bringing to justice perpetrators of the coup who have so far evaded the arm of the law," Mrs Koroi said.

Meanwhile it is believed that some of the businessmen implicated have been financing right wing political parties with the hope that with the coming to power of these parties, they may be let off the judicial hook.
