Issue No: 876; 22 June 2001Today's Fiji Times reports that the military has been on alert for fear of another mutiny. The paper states: "The army was put on full alert yesterday following reports of a plan to stage another mutiny at the military headquarters. Commander Viliame Naupoto confirmed last night that reports of unrest had been `floating around' and security was accordingly tightened. He declined to comment further but gave an assurance there was nothing to worry about and that the situation was under control". Some senior military officers who were involved in the 19 May
and the 2 November attempted coups are still with the military. Internal
investigations by the military on the 19 May terrorism confirmed the roles of
numerous senior military officers. The officers ganged up to stage the 2
November failed mutiny. It is well-known that Sitiveni Rabuka, Isikia Savua, and
some chiefs, including Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, and members of the Cakobau family
are closely linked to the attempted coups. All these are under investigation for
their roles. Takiveikata has already been charged while files on the others have
either been sent to the prosecution office or are under compilation. |
