Investigate Gujarati businessmen - Commerce Chamber

Issue No: 887; 26 June 2001

The President of the Labasa Chamber of Commerce Shiv Lal Nagindas says that some prominent Gujarati businessmen must be investigated for financing the terrorists who took over the Parliament Complex last year.

Yesterday's Daily Post reported Nagindas, himself a Gujarati businessmen and Senator, as saying that the business community had financed the May 19 civilian coup last year. He said that a year has passed and those investigating the coup have failed to lay charges on anyone belonging to the business community.

Nagindas said: "The evidence is all over the place and it is saddening to note that police have not arrested anyone yet. I mean to say the suffering caused by May 19 is still evident. Innocent people have lost their jobs and some are still on pay-cuts. I do not understand why there is a delay in justice."

Mr Nagindas said the economic and social problems in Labasa are worsening day by day. "Many people here can only afford essential food item, like, sharps, rice, salt, dhal and soap. They no longer can afford to spend on luxury items. Our business is drastically affected."

The police has confirmed that it is investigating 10 ethnic Indian businessmen for their involvement with the terrorists.
