Another jewellery shop raided

Issue No: 891; 27 June 2001

Another jewellery shop was raided by armed thugs yesterday morning.

The Mahakali Jewelleries of Nadi was raided by 5 armed thugs at about 10am. $35,000 worth of jewellery was stolen.

Three weeks ago, a jewellery shop in Ba was similarly raided. A police constable has been one of those arrested for the Ba robbery.

A week before the Ba robbery, a jewellery store in central Suva was raided in broad day light.

It is believed that the raids are organised by some in the jewellery business as they are the major buyers of the stolen jewels. Other prominent figures, including one politician, are closely linked to one of the main suspects in the racket. The police has not been able to crack the racket.
