Apology to Boyd

Issue No: 892; 28 June 2001

The Australian High Commissioner has complained about our posting No. 885 saying that the last paragraph of the posting "contains a highly defamatory statement about me, which has no basis in fact."

She further complained: "The statement makes allegations which are both quite untrue, have no basis in fact, and impugn my professionalism. I am sure you will appreciate my concern, and I would ask that you take whatever steps are necessary to withdraw these allegations and request the Peoples Coalition to cease making such public utterances. In addition, I would appreciate a public apology and retraction to be carried on your website."

Article 885 reported Ambassador Susan Boyd's comments at a meeting over the weekend where she called on the Fiji people to accept the results of election.

Ambassador Boyd's effective complaint is against the statement: "Boyd, who reliable sources place as having a close and less than professional relationship with one of the Qarase regime's ministers…"

[........]

But we ourselves do not have any direct evidence of Ms Boyd having "a close and a less than professional relationship with one of Qarase regime's ministers".

In light of this, we retract this statement, and offer our sincere and unreserved apology, without prejudice, to Ms Boyd.

We, however, stand by the rest of the contents of posting No. 885.
