FLP wants Baba investigated

Issue No: 900; 30 June 2001

The Fiji Labour Party wants the Fiji Police to investigate a statement which former FLP member Tupeni Baba made to the Fiji Times.

In a complaint to the Fiji Police, the Fiji Labour Party stated:
"In the Saturday, June 23rd, edition of the Fiji Times, Dr Tupeni Baba made certain statements against the FLP Leader Mahendra Chaudhary."

"In the front page article Dr Baba is quoted as saying:
"If he (Chaudhary) remains until the general elections, he will find out how unpopular he is."

"The statement implies that Dr Baba has knowledge that Mr Chaudhary may not be around for the general election."

"The statement implies that Dr Baba has reasons to believe that there is a possibility that Mr Chaudhary's life is in danger and that he may not live to see the August election."

"The statement is of great concern to the FLP Lautoka Branch."

"We believe that police need to investigate this matter to the fullest so that Dr Baba's statements can be substantiated."

"Mr Chaudhary is a public figure and he should be able to do his job freely and without fear and intimidation."

"It should be noted that Dr Baba has severed ties with the Fiji Labour Party and has formed his each party."
