Law and Order Worry

Issue No: 902; 2 July 2001

The Fiji Labour Party has called for greater military involvement in maintaining law and order in the country.

Elected Prime Minister, Mahendra Chaudhry stated that the police are incapable of handling the law and order situation in the country. He stated: "its quite shocking, particularly that a man as gentle as [John Scott] should meet his death in such gruesome fashion. The military should be asked to conduct night patrols because its evident that police are unable to cope with the situation".

Chaudhry also stated: "The nation is bothered by an increasing crime rate which has become prevalent since the events of May 19.. Not enough is being done to curb criminal activities".

Crime rate has skyrocketed over the past year. In many criminal cases the police have also been implicated.

Police Commissioner Isikia Savua was earlier implicated with involvement with the terrorists.
