Qarase condemns Mara, Rabuka leadership

Issue No: 911; 4 July 2001

Regime's Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has condemned the leadership of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara and Sitiveni Rabuka.

Address the meeting of the Serua Provincial Council on Serua Island, Qarase stated:
"We are all aware of the deterioration of our village life. A lot of crimes are being committed, elders are losing the respect they deserve, the village environment is dirty, and there seems to be an increase in the lack of respect for authority.

"All these would not have emerged if there was good leadership. It may be time now to strengthen traditional leadership systems,"

Fiji was led by Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara from 1970 to 1987 and then again from 1988-1992. Rabuka led Fiji from 1992 to 1999.

Qarase also told the meeting that it would be productive for indigenous Fijians to re-establish and strengthen the village, tikina and provincial councils to help administer the villagers' daily activities. He also stated that and effective and efficient administration of the affairs of the villagers was needed.
