NFP should admit truth - Chaudhry

Issue No: 912; 4 July 2001

The National Federation Party should accept the truth that some of its staunch supporters had funded the terrorists, says the elected Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry.

Chaudhry was responding to the call by NFP's make-up leader Harish Sharma's call for the elimination of Chaudhry. He stated Sharma should have the "decency to admit the truth."

"Indeed during the 1999 general elections campaign NFP officials and candidates were openly threatening voters in their meetings there would be a coup should the Peoples Coalition win the elections. Hundreds of people who attended their meeting can bear witness to this,' Mr Chaudhry said.

"A number of businessmen who are alleged to be NFP financiers funded George Speight and his terrorists. Their names are with the Police and senior NFP officials know of this."

Mr Chaudhry said they also know of a prominent supermarket owner in Suva and NFP supporter who gave food and other supplies to the terrorists. Another very prominent businessman, often seen taking morning walks with top NFP leadership, has also been identified and his name is with police as well.

"Why they pretend that no one from NFP is involved? NFP must accept misdeeds of its supporters who financed the coup. They will have to pay for the grave sin they have committed against their own people."

Mr Chaudhry added that Mr Sharma and his NFP would do well to read a recently published interview given by Lieutenant-Colonel Viliame Seruvakula in which he has clearly pointed tot he involvement of Indian businessmen in funding the coup.
