Qarase extorting money from businessmem

Issue No: 913; 4 July 2001

The regime's Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has started demanding money from businessmen and business houses to fund his political party.

In letters written to many business houses, Qarase demands that they fund his party activities. Many businessmen have stated that they are scared that if they do not concede to the demands, then the regime will victimise them. The Transparency International, which had given a press conference yesterday, did not comment on the demands.

The 2-page letters, signed by Qarase as President of the Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua, gave a bank account number for the businessmen to deposit their money. Some businessmen also state that the number of regime's Sports and Youth Minister keni Dakuidreketi was given if the businessmen wanted the funds to be personally picked up. The phone number is that of a government phone (905775).

The text of the letter follows:

"I write to request your financial support for the Soqosoqo Duavata in Lewenivanua as we move into the main part of the campaign for the general elections."

"As you know, the poll is crucial for returning Fiji to stable Parliamentary democracy after last year's turmoil. We believe the SDL will provide our country with safe and steady leadership."

"Many of our candidates stepped forward to serve in the interim Government when Fiji desperately needed leaders who could rescue the Country form disaster. They succeeded against the odds and set the Country on course for recovery. Now, as the founders of SDL, they are ready to finish the task."

"Our party has always had a clear vision for Fiji. It is to build a country where different ethnic communities live in peace, harmony and prosperity, where rule of law prevails and the security of citizens and their property is assured. Our manifesto, to be released soon centers on this pledge. It provides a comprehensive plan for taking Fiji forward and responds tot he needs of every citizen of Fiji. Because we are committed to lifting the economic status of the indigenous people, does not mean we are against other groups. The SDL will operate an inclusive government."

"Our party believes Fiji must learn from the mistakes of the past and discard the kind of politics which led the country to disaster. We must not go backwards. The country does not need more of the same."

"The SDL, therefore, stands for an era of renewal, for a fresh start and direction, for new leadership, with new values and a well-defined sense of purpose."

"Establishing a political party and operating an election campaign is expensive. We have been able to finance our activities so far through the backing of members. All or candidates are also expected contribute to party funds. But, we now need to appeal to the wider community for support. We would appreciate very much any donation you can make. Please consider such support as an investment in peace and stability and the restoration of Fiji."

"Cheques can be made payable to Soqosoqo Duavata ni Lewenivanua or SDL and posted to GPO Box. 16011, Suva."

"I thank you for taking the time to read this and feel sure your response will be positive. "
