Mutiny plan serious

Issue No: 920; 6 July 2001

The media has revealed of some senior army officers planning to assassinate the military commander and one of his senior officers.

Today's Fiji Sun had a lead report titled: "Kill plot".

The paper states that some senior army officers have been plotting another mutiny. These officers are based at the military's Strategic Planning Unit. The Unit is based near the Government House, well away from the military headquarters. Some officers who were implicated in the 19 May terrorist activity, and the 2 November failed mutiny, have also been moved out of the Headquarters to the Planning Unit.

The paper reports that the Military Commander Com. Frank Bainimarama turned up unannounced at the Planning Unit and confronted the officers involved in the plot.

The paper identified two colonels and a major as the main officers whom Com. Bainimarama accused of plotting another mutiny. The plan was to eliminate the Commander and his Director of Operations before the August General Election.

The newspaper gave a hard hitting editorial today, calling on the officers involved in the new mutiny plot to think of the nation first rather than their selfish motives.

Meanwhile, independent reports that some military officers are involved in establishing a camp in preparation for a mutiny and a coup, has not been verified. It is understood that 4 officers are being tracked by the military for actions which could start another major upheaval. Former Military Commander Sitiveni Rabuka has also stated that a small group of determined people can create untold damage to Fiji.
